"Hunters Moon"

October 8, 2014

WARM MEAL SEASON: Time for stews, soups, millet, rice, chickpeas, dark beans, sea vegetables, cooked leafy greens, warm stewed pears and apples. These warming foods will strengthen the immune system warding off illnesses of all kinds.

Dad always had an Elk ready for our winters. Check out my, "What Should I Eat", blog post video about why and when we need small amounts of meat in our diets.

How do you warm your body for the season?

Beware: Smoothies and juicing cool the body. Cooling the body is weakening to the lungs and kidneys which we want to warm to ward off coughs, colds, and flus. Fruits in general cause inflammation in the body which during the warm summer months our bodies can manage.

The Full Hunter’s Moon - The full, "Hunters Moon," is exact today, October 8th, @ 6:50 AM - This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon, Blood Moon, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees, the deer are fattened, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes.
